Content Guidelines

Team Caffy2025-12-29

Caffy is a creative platform where you build living characters, write scenarios, and build interactive stories with AI. We believe great storytelling can venture into dark, complex, and ambiguous territory where the most powerful fiction lives.

The purpose of these guidelines is to build a safe, fun space in which we can all find, create, and enjoy AI experiences on Caffy. "Content" refers to anything created or uploaded on Caffy, including but not limited to characters, scenes, scenarios, posts, images, and comments.

Every creator is expected to set appropriate content ratings for their published content based on the content ratings below.

Content suitable for users aged 13 and up. Comparable to ESRB T / MPAA PG-13 / PEGI 12+

Violence & Danger

  • Fantasy or stylized violence where death is possible but not graphic.

  • Action and peril with high stakes — survival is uncertain but hope remains.

  • Adventure stories in the vein of The Lord of the Rings or The Dark Knight.

  • Injury depicted without gore or excessive detail.

Romantic & Relationships

  • High school drama, first romance, flirtation, and attraction

  • Physical affection appropriate in public settings (holding hands, a first kiss).

  • Relationship conflict and drama with emotional stakes that teens can relate to.

  • References to cohabitation or shared living without sexual focus.

  • Mild jealousy, growing apart, communication problems — relatable, not traumatic.

  • Brief, non-explicit descriptions of physical attractiveness.

  • Authority-gap attractions (e.g. senior/junior students) where clear boundaries are maintained.

Language

  • Moderate use of mild-to-moderate profanity

  • Occasional stronger language (non-sexual variants)

  • Realistic teenage dialogue including insults or verbal confrontation

Themes

  • Social drama, bullying, identity struggles, and coming-of-age complexity.

  • Nuanced characters with mixed motivations—moral ambiguity that is still accessible.

  • Supernatural or speculative elements raising ethical questions without deep psychological horror.

  • Brief unsettling encounters that create tension but not severe distress.

  • References to cosplay, uniforms, or distinctive clothing in a non-sexual context.

  • Mystery, suspense, and thriller tension with the possibility of resolution.

Content Suitable for users aged 17 and up. Comparable to ESRB M / MPAA R / PEGI 18+

Violence & Danger

  • Detailed action sequences with serious injury, blood, and death—depicted without glorification.

  • Mass deaths, war narratives, serial killings, and crime drama with realistic consequences.

  • Content that emphasizes mortality and lethal consequences.

  • Graphic historical contexts: slavery, concentration camps, institutionalized abuse.

  • Characters with abilities centered around causing death.

  • Body horror and disturbing scenarios—without gratuitous gore for its own sake.

Romance & Relationships

  • Sexual or romantic tension that implies (but does not explicitly depict) sexual activity.

  • "Bedroom-adjacent" scenes where sexual activity is implied, not described.

  • Detailed exploration of adult relationship dynamics: infidelity, jealousy, manipulation, betrayal.

  • Toxic relationships (manipulation, gaslighting, emotional abuse) portrayed critically, not romanticized.

  • Non-traditional relationship structures (polyamory, open relationships).

  • Detailed descriptions of physical attraction with sexual undertones.

  • Significant authority-gap relationships, acknowledged as ethically complex.

  • Complex psychological portrayal of falling out of love, abandonment, or codependency.

  • A lone character in an environment where gender imbalance or romantic potential is a central focus.

  • Explicit discussion of power imbalance, consent concerns, or vulnerability in relationships.

Language

  • Frequent an varied strong language, including sexual variants of profanity

  • Coarse dialogue in realistic contexts such as military, crime, or street settings

  • Sexual reference in dialogue

Themes

  • Dark themes with narrative purpose: addiction, mental illness, systemic abuse, war trauma.

  • Significant moral ambiguity requiring adult judgment to process.

  • Deep psychological trauma: PTSD, dissociation, identity crisis, existential dread.

  • Substance abuse, addiction cycles, and the social consequences of dependency.

  • Characters who cannot distinguish reality from fantasy — where psychological distress is the point.

  • Powers or abilities that explicitly involve deep psychological manipulation of others.

  • Scenarios involving institutional betrayal, cover-ups, or collapse of trust.

  • Revenge plots with genuine moral complexity and dark consequences.

  • Scenarios where a character's humiliation carries clear erotic undertone (eroticized embarrassment).

Caffy is built on the belief that fiction can (and should) explore the full spectrum of human experience. Crime, violence, moral failure, addiction, war, and despair are all legitimate territory for storytelling.

A story about a serial killer, a war criminal, or a drug lord is not in violation of these guidelines simply because its subject matter is dark.

  • Criminal acts and illegal activity, portrayed within a narrative context with consequences.

  • Villain protagonists, morally corrupt characters, and unreliable narrators.

  • War crimes, atrocities, and systemic evil, when used to illuminate human experience.

  • Psychological manipulation, coercion, and abuse, when depicted critically, not instructively.

  • Substance use, trafficking, and organized crime as plot and character drivers.

  • Fictional legal systems, courts, prisons, and enforcement, including their failures and abuses.

The distinction is not subject matter, but function. Content crosses the line when it steps outside the frame of storytelling and begins serving a real-world harmful purpose.

Fiction — Permitted

Prohibited — Real-World Function

A character explains how they built a bomb in their backstory

Step-by-step instructions that could enable a real bomb

A story depicting a character who grooms a child — shown as harmful

Dialogue or tactics a real abuser could use on a real child

A thriller where a character hacks a system

Actual working exploit code embedded in the narrative

A character who is a drug manufacturer

Synthesis instructions for real narcotics

A character inspired by a real criminal archetype

Content using the name and likeness of a specific real offender

Content involving real, identifiable individuals (whether celebrities, public figures, private persons, crime victims, or offenders) is strictly limited.

  • Sexual depictions of any real person, living or deceased.

  • Content using the name, likeness, or identifying details of real crime victims.

  • Content using the name or likeness of named real-world offenders or perpetrators.

  • Realistic photographic or portrait-style depictions of real individuals.

  • Content that attributes false statements of fact to a real person in a way that could mislead.

  • Content designed to harass, defame, or harm a specific individual.

  • Fictional characters clearly inspired by or in the genre of a real-world archetype, without using real names or likenesses.

  • Historical figures in clearly fictional or allegorical contexts, labeled as such.

Caffy is primarily an original content platform. We respect the IP rights of all creators and rights holders, and we ask you to do the same.

Here is a quick guide to what is and is not permitted.

  • Original characters (OC). Fully original characters, worlds, and stories you created are always welcome. This is what Caffy is built for.

  • Public domain works. Characters and stories whose copyright has expired—Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, characters from Greek mythology—are free to use, adapt, and reimagine. Note that specific modern adaptations of public domain works (e.g., a particular studio's film version) may themselves be under copyright.

Tip: For works created after 1978, copyright protection generally lasts for the author's life plus 70 years.

  • Works with explicit permission. If a rights holder has granted public permission for fan works—through an official fan creation policy, a Creative Commons license, or direct authorization from the copyright holder—you may build on their IP within the scope of that permission.

  • Fan-inspired originals. A character inspired by the spirit or genre of an existing work, but with original names, design, and story, is generally fine.

  • Directly reproducing copyrighted characters, names, likenesses, or story elements without permission.

  • Publishing public works based on fandoms and copyrighted materials, which are subject to moderation under our discretion and takedown requests by the copyright holder. These works may be made private.

  • Uploading or using assets (images, text, music) owned by a third party without authorization.

  • Content that could mislead others into believing it is official or endorsed by the rights holder.

We do not allow content sexually depicting underage characters. For any sexual depiction, all characters must be at least 18 years or older. This applies even if the character's age is set as an adult. For clarification, the following rules apply in any sexual context:

  • Characters must be 18+: Any character explicitly or implicitly under 18 will be deleted.

  • Users portrayed as minors: Characters where the user can be portrayed as underage will be deleted without warning.

  • Childlike imagery: If a character image resembles a minor, it will be removed.

  • Childlike mental state: Characters unable to make informed decisions or give consent like an adult will be removed.

  • Sexual depictions of any real, identifiable person (celebrity, public figure, or private individual) is prohibited

  • Content using real photographs or photorealistic likenesses of individuals in a sexual context is prohibited

We do not allow content that functions as actual instructions (regardless of fictional framing) for:

  • Manufacturing weapons, explosives, or dangerous substances

  • Child grooming tactics or abuse facilitation

  • Working malware, exploits, or hacking instructions

  • Drug synthesis or production

  • Self harm or or suicide

If you are experiencing distress and are considering self harm, help is available by texting or calling the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 (US only, international numbers can be found here).

These contents are not allowed:

  • Bestiality: sexual depictions of acts between humans and animals.

  • Non-consensual sexual scenarios presented approvingly or eroticized.

  • Content that promotes, glorifies, or provides detailed instruction for real-world suicide or self-harm.

  • Content targeting or demeaning protected groups (disability, ethnicity, religion, age, gender) without meaningful narrative purpose.

  • Graphic violence against vulnerable individuals (children, elderly, pregnant persons) presented for shock or gratification rather than narrative purpose.

  • Commercial exploitation of sexual violence: promotion or glorification of rape or sexual assault.

  • Illegal content under U.S., EU, or Korean law applicable to Caffy's operations.

  • Female nipple exposure

  • Visible genitals, pubic hair, or anus

  • Photographs or photorealistic depictions of real individuals

  • Images of celebrities or public figures without clear fictional/satirical framing

  • Imagery that visually depicts a minor in any sexualized or suggestive way

Images for Rated R may include:

  • Clearly intended sexual elements in character appearance or context.

  • Overly emphasized body parts (e.g., breasts, legs) in a sexualized presentation.

  • Visible genital outlines through clothing.

  • Nudity that is non-explicit (no genitals or female nipples) in adult-themed contexts

The following do not require an R rating:

  • Shirtless men (as long as it’s not sexualized)

  • Simple cleavage that is not the focal point of the image

  • Breasts not presented in a sexual context

  • Minor injuries like cuts, scrapes and bruises

  • References to romance (without explicit content)

When in doubt: rate it R and avoid headache.

A few practical reminders to keep your creative work visible and your account in good standing:

  • Rate at creation, not after. Setting the right rating when you publish prevents complaints and surprise takedowns.

  • Dark themes are not the same as prohibited content. A story can be disturbing, violent, or morally complex at Teen or R without violating anything.

  • If a character's age matters, state it clearly and consistently. Ambiguity in a sexual context is always resolved toward minor.

  • Original is safer. Characters built from scratch are protected from IP claims

  • Use the fictional frame genuinely. If your "fiction" is just a wrapper around real instructions for real harm, it is not fiction—and it will be treated accordingly.

  • If you're unsure of the rating: ask yourself whether a 13-year-old stumbling onto this would be disturbed or exposed to something they shouldn't see. If yes, it's at least R.
